Welcome Back – August 2016

August 20, 2016

Dear NHS Students and Parents:

We are now in our final week of the beautiful (and longer than usual) summer vacation. Whether you spent time relaxing at home, sitting by the shore, or exploring interesting places, I hope the time spent with family and friends was enjoyable. We anticipate another positive and productive school year, which will begin for all students on Monday, August 29th. A schedule for the first two days of school (August 29th and August 30th) are included with this letter.

We are always excited to welcome students back to Newtown High School and to support a smooth transition for our freshman students. A freshman orientation, sponsored by our Link Crew, will be held on Tuesday, August 23rd.

Some reminders as we begin the new school year:

  • School begins promptly at 7:20 a.m. Advisory periods will occur each morning from 7:20 a.m. – 7:30 a.m. These are a part of the regular school day and are used to make meaningful connections with students, disseminate school-wide information, as well as engage students in activities related to our Safe School Climate and Culture goals. ALL students are expected to be present as attendance will be taken.
  • Personalized Learning Community (PLC) days will occur throughout the year, which is a time for students to gain valuable study time, work independently in computer labs and the media center for research, meet with counselors, or complete tests or quizzes due to absences. During PLC days, all students are expected to arrive on time, and classes will begin directly following the study period. A schedule for these days is located on our website. Only seniors may enact their privileges and arrive at school for their first class.
  • Opening Day Assemblies will be held for students in all grades to welcome students back to school, provide an overview of the daily schedule, and review school and district expectations. Assemblies will take place on August 29th and 30th (freshman and seniors) and 28th (sophomores and juniors).
  • Information and communication is important to us. You will always be able to access the information you need through our school website, department websites, Facebook, twitter or through ongoing communication via our School Messenger.

I am again privileged to work with such a dedicated staff, motivated students, and invested parent community. Staff and administration at Newtown High School takes pride in the education of our students and, as a result, Newtown High School was recently recognized in Newsweek as one of the top high schools in the nation (2nd year). However, this only means we need to work even harder to maintain quality programs and practices, as well as to ensure we continue to support the needs of our students and families.

Enjoy the remaining days of summer and we look forward to seeing you on opening day!

Sincerely,

Lorrie Rodrigue
