Dear NHS Students and Parents,
We would like to remind you of some events taking place at Newtown High School in the upcoming weeks ahead. The following include details of these events:
November 16 – PLC day. Students will begin their day with places for study, test makeup, research, computer labs, support centers, and access to Guidance.
International Week – Monday begins our International Week at the high school. During PLC on Monday and throughout the week, students will be able to share in the festivities, including the following:
- – an anime film in the lecture hall (Ponyo)
- – students can learn to dance merengue in the side gym
- – Pandora World Radio will be playing in the cafeteria
- – International food and music will be featured each day of the week
November 25 – Early release for all students. Alumni Day at the high school. NHS alum are invited back to the school to visit!
December 1 – WOW! Workshops of Wellness. Sponsored by our Link Crew, we will be presenting an informational evening for ALL FRESHMAN AND THEIR PARENTS from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Freshman and their parents will attend workshops on topics such as mental health, substance awareness and abuse, as well as Internet safety. Booths will also be set up with info about resources available in the community regarding wellness.
We are asking that all freshmen attend this event (formerly Freshman Forum), and will include an additional incentive for our ninth grade students who participate. Each student will receive 10 points extra credit to apply to their PE or Health grade (either Semester 1 or Semester 2). This ten points is not in lieu of attending a class or completing an assignment. We hope to see all of our freshman at WOW on 12/1/15.
*Snow Date (please note the actual snow date for this event is December 3. Disregard previously reported snow date).
December 2 – A special “early dismissal” day. All NHS (and NMS) students will be released at 11:02 a.m. to accommodate staff development and keynote speaker, Dr. Bruce Perry, who will speak on recovery and resiliency. While there will be no formal lunch waves at the high school, students will be able to get food and snacks throughout the morning.
As outlined in a recent letter by Dr. Erardi to all families, Dr. Perry will also be keynoting a community breakfast for Newtown residents on December 2nd starting at 9:00 a.m. at the Newtown Congregational Church.
We are excited about the events going on in the upcoming weeks. This same information will be posted on my Principal’s Blog, as well as on our Facebook page. Students will continue to receive reminders about these events via school-wide announcements and discussions in their Advisories each morning.
