NHS-Graduation and Final Examinations

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As we move closer to the end of the year, I wanted to provide information related to our final exam schedule. Final exam days are scheduled for Thursday, June 11, Friday, June 12, Monday, June 15 and Tuesday, June 16. Attached you will find the final exam schedule for all students. Buses will depart the high school at our regularly scheduled early dismissal time – 12:02 p.m.

Newtown High School’s 2015 commencement ceremony for our graduates will be held on Tuesday, June 16th beginning at 4:00 p.m. at the O’Neill Center, Western Connecticut State University. Students will receive 6 tickets for family members to attend. This was changed from previous years based on a warning from the facility manager last year that we were well exceeding the room occupancy (3,000) and thus violating mandated fire codes. Unfortunately, and to ensure the ceremony is allowed to be held, we had to limit the number of tickets this year. We have approximately 459 graduates, which means more than 3,200 family members with tickets will be in attendance, as well as faculty and administration.

We are currently looking into the possibility of broadcasting the ceremony via cable and/or Youtube. This would enable friends and other family members the opportunity to share in our graduates’ special night. We will send further details as we get closer to the ceremony, as well as a special communication regarding student behavioral expectations for the final days of school and graduation.

Thank you,

Final Exams Schedule

PLC Day- May 19

April 30, 2015

Dear Students, Parents and Guardians,

On May 19th, we will be piloting a Professional Learning Community morning, which will provide a school-based “internal” delayed opening for staff and students. Regular bus transportation remains as normally scheduled. Students are expected to arrive at the regular scheduled time and will be given an opportunity to study, complete work, projects, or assignments, conduct research, or make up tests or quizzes. Teachers will use this time to collaborate professionally while administrators and other support personnel monitor students in computer labs, Media Center, cafeteria, cafetorium, and counseling office. No advisory will take place on this day.

The purpose of this morning is also to provide stress relief. We want students to be given time to take a breath and be able to catch up, especially as we move toward the end of the year. Seniors have the option to come in for their first class as part of their senior privilege. However, all students should use this time wisely.

In an effort to support teaching and learning, we believe it is important to develop practices that will ensure staff and students are given opportunities to reflect deeply on teaching and learning, as well as to engage in tasks and projects that will contribute to success.

Thank you,

Lorrie Rodrigue
